General

What is Landscape Lighting?

Landscape lighting is low voltage outdoor lighting used to illuminate and highlight outdoor living spaces, gardens, trees, pathways, driveways, statues, & water features. Landscape lighting does not only add elements of beauty and functionality to your outdoor spaces, but it also provides safety and security to your property.

What are the different types of landscape lights?

There are 7 types of landscape lights, each designed for a purpose. For more info, have a look at the Types of Lighting Fixtures lighting guide.

Path Lights – Typically used to illuminate pathways and garden beds.

Accent Lights – These are little spotlights used for lighting up trees, statues, and other features you want to highlight.

Hardscape Lights – Installed in rock walls, driveways, pathways, stairs and decking to animate textures and increase the safety aspect of your outdoor spaces.

Deck Lights – Used to indicate steps and railings as well as create a welcoming atmosphere for outdoor seating areas with subtle lighting.

Flood & Wash Lights – Perfect for illuminating large areas, especially to bring out textured details and shapes. Normally for silhouette and shadow lighting techniques.

Well Lights – These lights sit flush with the ground and are ideal for driveways, and creating uplighting effects in places where you don’t want fixtures protruding from the ground.

Underwater Lights – Don’t just enjoy your water features during the day, but at night as well. Feature your beautiful fountains, waterfalls, and ponds with underwater lights.

What voltage is landscape lighting?

Landscape lighting is 12 volts, which is considered low voltage lighting. The use of low voltage wiring, and fixtures makes the installation and maintenance process much more cost effective than regular 120V lighting.

How many lights can I install on one circuit?

The number of lights depends on the amount of power each light draws (watts) and how much capacity your transformer has. An installation that uses 4-watt lights can have up to 11 lights on circuit with a 60-watt transformer with 16-gauge wire. If you have a basic plan with measurements our staff can help size the right lights, wire, and transformer.

Do I need a photocell to turn my lights on at sunset?

Many of our transformers have built in photocells to detect sunset. These transformers need to be mounted outside and the photocell must have access to sunlight. Alternatively, if your transformer supports a timer accessory you can set your lights to come on and go off when you want. Some transformers are Wi-Fi compatible allowing you to access your lights timing through a cellular app, or Bluetooth enabled that you could program, which will calculate the times of sunrise and sunset.

I want to put my transformer inside, but I want the lights to go on at sunset. How do I do this?

There are two good options that will meet your needs. One is to get a timer that supports a remotely located photocell. The second option is to get a Bluetooth enabled timer that you can program, which will calculate the times of sunrise and sunset.

How do I splice wires together?

Landscape lighting wire connections are usually buried and can be affected by erosion. We recommend using gel-filled connectors to eliminate corrosion. We carry both gel filled marrettes and Kichler Pro-Connectors.

How to do I know how many watts my lights are?

Wattage will be indicated on all lighting packaging and on the products spec sheet available on the respective product manufacturer page.

What light bulb does my fixture need?

If your light requires the separate purchase of a bulb, it will be indicated in the product description and on its corresponding spec sheet. If your light indicates that it’s “integrated”, then no separate bulb purchases are required.

How many path lights should I install along my walkways?

The number of fixtures required to properly illuminate your walkways will be dependent on how long your walkways are and the type of installation technique you are intending to use.

For a linear installation (all lights on the same side of the path) we recommend installing light fixtures 12 feet apart from the base of the stem. For a staggered installation, we recommend installing fixtures 15 feet apart (on the diagonal) from the base of the stem.

For visual diagrams of these two installation techniques, please see the Lighting Techniques lighting guide.

What's the best way to illuminate steps?

There are two great ways to make steps visible during the evening hours. The first is to use path lights. This is best suited for small steps (1-4 steps) that are set next to lawn or garden beds. The second is to use hardscape lights. Hardscape lights come in many variations and are great for illuminating flights of steps of any size.

Can I hook up Wi-Fi to any Transformer?

No, your transformer must be Wi-Fi compatible. If you’re looking for a Wi-Fi enabled transformer, we would recommend the Smart transformers from Kichler, see here, or the Contractor series transformers which become Wi-Fi enabled when paired with the Smart Control Timer.

Does Landlight install lighting?

No we don't personally have a team of installers, however we are more than happy to recommend some trusted contractors to do the job. Contact us for help.

What gauge of wire should I use?

As the number associated with the wire gets smaller, the wire itself gets thicker. The gauge of wire you select for your system will depend on the wattage of your lighting design and the required length of cable. Please see the bottom of the resources page for a detailed chart.
