Lighting Techniques

Approach to a stone house lit with landscape lighting

Every lighting project is unique, and depending on the overall look and feel you're trying to portray with your lighting, you'll be using different mixes of techniques. Utilizing a range of different lighting techniques really makes your property pop.

Path Lighting: Linear vs. Staggered

Linear Installation - gives a modern and clean look to any path lighting. Great for when the pathways sides are different heights.

Staggered Installation - the more traditional installation pattern, staggered lighting provides full and even pathway illumination while avoiding the dreaded "runway" look.

Wall Washing

Highlights the unique textures and shapes of your house, walls and rockery. This techniques adds a beautiful depth to the look of your lighting.

Accent & Downlighting

Accent Lighting - perfect for creating dramatic and eye-catching displays of light. Ideally used for uplighting on trees, surfaces such as walls, statues, and fountains.

When using accent lighting on trees, its good to keep in mind the number of accent lights each tree will need. As trees get larger, they will require more lights at more angles to properly feature its branches and foliage.

It's also important to consider the width of your trees, as accent lighting is available in narrower and wider beam spreads.

Downlighting - best suited to extending the lifecycle of your outdoor spaces by illuminating outdoor seating.

Silhouette & Shadow Lighting

Silhouette - show off the interesting shapes of trees, foliage or object by lighting up the vertical surface behind them, like a wall or the side of your house.

Shadow - project the shadow of an object, tree or shrub onto a vertical surface such as a wall or house by directly lighting the object from the front.

Moon Lighting

Simulate the glow of the moon by placing downlighting in the foliage of trees. This mimics the soft shadow effect the moon creates.

Hardscape & Deck Lighting

Hardscape lighting - not only highlights stairs, railings, fencing, walls, outdoor kitchens and more, but it also provides a great element of safety to your outdoor spaces.

Deck Lighting - elevate the beauty of your deck or patio by lighting posts and railings with this subtly beautiful technique while adding a sense of safety by indicating the top and bottom of stairs.
